HGV Insurance or Truck Insurance as it can also be known is a legal requirement if you intend to drive a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes GVW, going up to 44 tonnes GVW on a public highway. HGV vehicles can come in a variety of different guises such as Articulated, Curtainside, Tractor Unit among others.

Usage on HGV Insurance Policies

Generally the usage on a HGV Insurance policy will be either Carriage of Own Goods or Haulage Use.

The Carriage of Own Goods Policy will be for people who only move their own goods from place to place. An example of this may be a Building Contractor who may need to transport supplies or materials to a site.

The Haulage Policy will be for the operator who is being paid to transport goods belonging to other people both in the United Kingdom and also beyond.

Does HGV Insurance cover the goods being carried ?

No, the HGV Insurance policy will only cover the vehicle itself. To cover the goods being transported you will require an additional policy called Goods In Transit Insurance. Often Truck and HGV Operators will be asked to provide evidence of Goods In Transit Insurance along with HGV Insurance in order that they can fulfill a specific contract.
